一种杯垫大小的玻璃片，可能成为海量存储数据技术的未来。
微软和华纳兄弟公司合作进行了一项概念性测试，测试项目是一种新的长期信息存储技术。两家公司的研究人员成功将1978年的电影《超人》装入了一个杯垫大小的二氧化硅玻璃片上，并成功读取。这种新的媒介存储的使用寿命可以长达几个世纪，可以耐受住胶片或磁驱动器的无法承受的损毁。
研究人员使用的石英玻璃载玻片尺寸为75 x 75毫米，厚度仅为2毫米，但可以安全地存储75.6 GB数据，而且留有存储错误冗余代码的余量。尽管玻璃片听起来很脆弱，但测试证明它们还是非常“结实抗造”的。
研究团队将其暴露在各种恶劣环境下——淹没在水中、用微波炉加热，消磁，在水中煮沸，用钢丝绒摩擦，然后在260°C的烤箱中烘烤。经历了各种“洗礼”后，内部数据仍然可读。
实验表明，这些介质不会像传统存储设备那样容易受到火灾，洪水，地震，停电或电磁干扰的影响。它们不需要那么多的能量就能达成最佳的储存条件。目前，全球的数据中心需要大量的能量来降温冷却，这些玻璃片存储可能正派得上用场。而且，它们占用的物理空间也比传统存储设备小得多。

也许最重要的是，它们的使用寿命可以达到1000年或更长时间。即使在理想条件下，磁存储设备也可能在十年之内退化。为了解决这个问题，许多公司每隔几年就将数据抢先转移到较新的设备上，这是一个昂贵且耗时的过程。
考虑到长期需求和耐用性要求，Project Silica并不是针对消费者市场的，其目标客户是有大量数据归档需求的公司。
微软研究院剑桥实验室副主任安特·罗兹特隆（Ant Rowstron）表示：“我们不是要打造一些可以放置到室内的设备，也不是用它来播放电影。“我们正在构建在云级别的存储。目前要解决的一大问题是将数据转移和重写到下一代介质上所需的大量时间。我们真的希望可以将某些东西存储长达50或100年，甚至1000年。”

可以使用计算机控制的显微镜读取玻璃片上的数据
当需要读取数据时，可以使用计算机控制的显微镜，用另一束激光检查玻璃片。根据体素的排布方向，光线会以不同的颜色反射回相机，根据体素的大小不同，反射光的强度也不同。可以使用机器学习算法分析这些信息及其所在的层，快速解码原始数据。
微软首席研究软件工程师理查德·布莱克（Richard Black）说：“如果你现在上了些岁数，一定能回想起当年使用盒式磁带倒带和转录歌曲的场景，可能要花一些时间才能找到想要的部分。相比之下，从玻璃介质上读取的速度非常快，因为可以在三个维度上同时找。”
石英玻璃存储并不是该项目唯一的新数据存储技术。研究人员也在测试的其他耐用存储技术，包括自然界本身存在的高密度存储介质（DNA存储）以及有机分子和细菌基因组存储等。
